Garlic
Soil Preparation
Garlic does not need very rich soil but it needs to be well drained. Work
in some bonemeal before planting.
When to Sow
September to November is the best time to plant garlic, but there are varieties
that can be sown in Spring.
Sowing
Garlic is normally delivered as bulbs. These need to be split into cloves
just before planting. Normally there will be between 10 and 15 cloves per
bulb.
Maintenance and Feeding
Keeping the plot free of weeds is probably the most important thing. Give
the plants a feed of Blood, fish and bone in Spring and water during dry
spells.Stop watering when the leaves start to die back.
When to harvest
Garlic is ready to harvest when the leaves start to die back, usually in
June for Autumn planted and July for Spring planted.
Varieties
There are 2 types og garlic; hardneck and softneck.
Softneck garlic is the easiest to grow and stores well. Hardneck produces
fewer but larger cloves and does not store as long as softneck varieties.
